DEKALB — The Murphysboro Red Devils ran into a buzzsaw by the name of Richmond-Burton in the 4A state championship game. The Rockets took home the title with a 50-14 win.
Richmond-Burton scored on its first two possessions, needing just nine offensive plays to build a 14-0 lead.
The Red Devils moved the ball inside the Rockets’ 25 twice in the first half, but had nothing to show for it.
Richmond-Burton then went on a scoring spree, tallying 27 points in a ten minute span in the third quarter to blow it open.
Dezmond Clark broke up the shutout with a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown. Clark added another scoring run later, but Richmond-Burton cruised to the championship.
The Red Devils will bring back the second place trophy from the first trip to the football state finals in school history.
