Points aplenty as Cairo downs Du Quoin


DU QUOIN — The Cairo Pilots opened play in the Du Quoin Tip-Off Classic with an 82-69 win over the hosts Wednesday night.

The Pilots used an 18-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and most of the second quarter to build a 31-15 lead. Du Quoin cut it to 33-23 by halftime.

The Indians continued their run in the third quarter, pulling within a point at 41-40, but the Pilots never relinquished their lead, pushing it back to 58-51 after three and then pulling away in the fourth.

Daurice Morse led all scorers with 20 for Cairo, but it was senior point guard Terrell Jones who controlled the game. Jones added 18 points and several gorgeous assists. Riko Nelson added 15, and Alton Hervey chipped in 14 for the Pilots.

Dasani Edward and Wade Roberson led Du Quoin with 16 each. Braeden Pursell added 15 and Kadin Mays 14.

Both teams are back in tournament action Friday as the Pilots will play Carmi-White County at 5:30 followed Du Quoin and Red Bud at 7:00.
