Woodlawn runs past Waltonville

WALTONVILLE — It appeared to be Rivals Night in boys high basketball across Southern Illinois Friday, with conference match ups including Pinckneyville/Du Quoin, Marion/Carbondale, and Sesser-Valier/Christopher.

In the Midland Trail, that means Woodlawn and Waltonville.

The Cardinals remained unbeaten in conference play with a 60-35 win in their rivals’ house.

Woodlawn used a swarming, high-pressure defense to build a 24-11 second quarter lead. Waltonville got back in it with an 8-0 run, but the Cardinals scored nine of the final 11 in the first half to lead 33-21 at halftime.

Woodlawn then came out and scored the first seven of the third. Waltonville could get no closer than 12 from there.

It was not all positive for the Cardinals though, as standout guard Blake McKay went down with an apparent ankle injury late in the third quarter. McKay hobbled off under his own power, but did not return to the game. He scored 16 before leaving.

Woodlawn senior Race Rynski led all scorers with 19.

Jaxon Haley led Waltonville with 15. Dillon Banach added 13.

The Cardinals improve to 8-1, 3-0 in MTC play. The Spartans fall to 5-3, 2-1 in the conference.
