VIENNA — The Sesser-Valier/Waltonville Red Devils took over sole possession of first place in the Black Diamond-West, rallying to win at Vienna 62-55.
The Lady Eagles used an 11-1 run to close the second quarter to lead 38-30 at the half. The Red Devils cut that deficit in half, heading to the fourth trailing 47-43.
SVW scored nearly half of its points from behind the three-point line. The Red Devils had more three-point field goals than two-point field goals (10 vs 9). Jaice McCowen accounted for five of the ten, including two in the fourth quarter. The second gave the Red Devils a 55-53 lead with 3:40 to play. McCowen led SVW with 18 points on the night.
Mariah Stuby’s pull up jumper for Vienna with 3:20 left tied the game at 55, but the Lady Eagles would not score another point the rest of the way.
The Red Devils scored the game’s final seven points. Carlie Page put SVW on top to stay with a basket on an inbounds play.
Page was one of four Red Devils to reach double figures. In addition to McCowen’s 18, Ella Zahm added 13, Micah Reynolds 11, and Page ten.
Vienna’s Emma Rush led all scorers with 28 before fouling out.
SVW improves to 7-6, 5-1 in the Diamond-West. Vienna falls to 9-10, 4-2 in the conference.
