Nashville adds another regional championship to the collection


SESSER — For the fourth straight year and 20th time in the last 21 years, the Nashville Hornettes are celebrating a girls basketball regional championship.

Sophomore Alyssa Cole scored 23 points to lead Nashville past Pinckneyville 42-28 for the Sesser-Valier 2A Regional championship. It’s the second straight season the Hornettes have beaten the Lady Panthers for a regional championship.

Nashville used a 12-3 run late in the second quarter to seize control. The Hornettes led 22-11 at the half and then put it out of reach by outscoring Pinckneyville 16-8 in the third quarter before playing keep away most of the fourth quarter.

The Hornettes will now head to the Carterville Sectional where they will face Harrisburg Tuesday night at 7:30. This will be the fourth straight year Nashville and Harrisburg have met in the sectional semifinals.
