SESSER — In a matchup of early season Black Diamond-West unbeatens, Mason Goins’ layup with 4.1 seconds gave Christopher a 47-46 win at Sesser-Valier, spoiling the Red Devils’ fourth quarter rally.

After trailing 17-12 at the half, the Bearcats erupted for 20 third quarter points and eventually extended their lead to 12 early in the fourth quarter.

The Red Devils cut the deficit to two, then took a 46-45 lead with less than a minute to play on Eli Schoenbaechler’s three-pointer. That would set up Goins’ heroics.

Christopher’s Kye Garver missed a running baseline jumper with six seconds left, but Goins managed to get a jump ball on the rebound, with the Bearcats having the possession arrow. Trey Cole then found Goins underneath the basket for the go ahead layup.

The Red Devils had one final possession but an errant pass landed in Goins’ hands as time ran out.

Garver led the Bearcats with 15. Anthony Rolla added 11 and Goins 10. S-V’s Garrett Gunter led all scorers with 24.

Christopher improves to 4-0. The Bearcats will visit Vienna Tuesday. Sesser-Valier falls to 3-1. The Red Devils will host Goreville Friday.
