CARTERVILLE — With no postseason in this shortened basketball season due to the pandemic, the big prize for teams is a conference championship.

It’s mission accomplished for the Nashville Hornets.

The unbeaten Hornets wrapped up the SIRR Mississippi title outright with a 53-41 win at Carterville Friday night. Isaac Turner scored a game high 20 points, and Buzz Ritzel added 14 to pace the Nashville attack.

Peyton Bittle led the Lions with 17.

Nashville led 13-9 after one quarter and used a 7-0 run to start the second to push the lead to double figures. It was 24-13 at the half.

The Hornets led by as many as 18 in the second half and never allowed the Lions to get the lead back to single digits.

Nashville improves to 11-0 and will hit the road Saturday to take on Mt. Vernon. The Hornets are 9-0 in conference play and will try finish the perfect conference season Tuesday night at home against Pinckneyville.

Carterville falls to 8-4, 5-4 in the Mississippi. The Lions will visit Vienna Saturday.
