MARION — The Mt. Vernon Rams were well aware of Hunter Simmons’ ability at quarterback. Friday night, they saw it from a different perspective.
Simmons, who transferred to Marion, threw four touchdowns against his former teammates to lead the Wildcats to a 57-19 win.
Simmons found Jake Bruce for a 19-yard TD pass on the game’s first drive to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.
Simmons’ replacement answered quickly. Evan Leake and Fischer Davis connected for an 82-yard touchdown pass on the Rams’ first offensive play to tie the game.
Chase Isbell gave the Wildcats the lead with a four-yard TD run later in the first.
The Wildcats then took control outscoring the Rams 24-0 in the second quarter. Lukas Shrum’s nine yard scoring run pushed the lead to 22-6. Then Simmons and Mason Gooch connected for 66 and 47 yard touchdowns, the second coming in the final 30 seconds of the half, giving the Wildcats a 38-6 lead.
Marion improves to 3-0 with the win. Mt. Vernon falls to 1-2.
