BENTON — On a night when Benton junior quarterback Keegan Glover set the school record for career touchdown passes, it was Glover’s three touchdown runs that helped lead the Rangers to a 40-18 win over Murphysboro. With the win, Benton has clinched at least a share of the SIRR Ohio title.

Glover got the scoring started in the first quarter with a 36-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead. Murphysboro answered when Devon Clemons broke free for a 44-yard TD run, tying the game at 6. Peyton Swigonski gave Benton the lead back late in the first with a short TD run.

The teams traded touchdown passes in the second–Glover found Peyton Bayless for a 15-yard TD, and Murphysboro’s Ryan Finke hit Ethan Finke for a 14-yard TD. Benton took a 19-12 lead into halftime.

The Rangers, who had not allowed a point in the first three games, saw Murphysboro pull within 19-18 with 5:00 to go in the third quarter. Glover led the Rangers down the field–a 33-yard completion to Chase Thomas set up a one yard keeper. Glover found Reid Baumgarte for the two-point conversion and a 27-18 Benton lead.

The Rangers pulled away in the fourth. Glover’s 12-yard TD run two minutes into the final frame pushed the lead to 34-18. Then with 5:00 to go, Glover connected with Wyatt McClintock for a 14-yard touchdown, his school record-breaking 37th career TD pass.

Glover finished 13-19 for 247 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and an interception to go along with 10 rushes for 76 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Due to some scheduling flip flops, the 4-0 Rangers will now travel to Nashville Saturday at noon. Benton was originally scheduled to play Sparta, but the Bulldogs opted out of that game. Sparta will now play Massac County Friday night, who was originally scheduled to play Nashville.

Murphysboro falls to 2-2. The Red Devils will host Anna-Jonesboro Friday night.
