DU QUOIN — The Du Quoin Lady Indians felt like they had a great chance to defend their 2019 Girls Track and Field 1A State Championship last spring, but they never got that chance due to COVID-19. A year later, the Lady Indians will get their shot.

Du Quoin won its fourth straight sectional championship Wednesday, easily outdistancing the field assembled at Van Metre Field. The Lady Indians won all four relays and also qualified 11 individuals for next week’s Class A state meet in Charleston.

In addition to the four relays, Grace Alongi (400M/triple jump), Olivia Phillips (800M), Sophie Hill (high jump), and Jalynn Wood (pole vault/100M HH) all won their events with Jacqueline Crain, Lainey Miller, Maddie Robison, and Delaynie Dearmond also earning trips to state.

Other double event winners include Carmi-White County’s Jessica Smith (100M/200M), Hamilton County’s Maddie Karcher (1600M/3200M), and Sparta’s Kayla Braun (shot put, discus). Goreville’s Maci Tosh qualified in three events, winning the 300M hurdles and getting second in the long jump and 100M hurdles.
