CHARLESTON — The deep south only had a handful of area athletes qualify for the 2A Girls State Track and Field Championship, but five medaled in seven events–all but one field events.
Centralia junior Kylie Gormann was one of two multi-event medalists finishing sixth in the long jump at 17-11 then taking fourth in the triple jump at 35-10. Herrin freshman Karli Mann also medaled in the triple jump–Mann finished seventh with a leap of 35-3.
The South 7 had a big day in the throws, as Carbondale sophomore Madyson Swope and Marion junior Maryiah Menicucci both finished in the top five in the shot put. Menicucci threw 38-6.5 to finish fifth, just half an inch behind Swope who took fourth.
Swope was the other multi-event medalist, PR-ing in both the shot and discus. She finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 116-10.
The area’s other medalist came from the track, where A-J sophomore Brodie Denny finished 7th in the 800 with a time of 2:21.84. Massac County senior and SIU signee Ansley Bailey was 14th.
Bailey later finished 11th in the 400 and Denny 23rd in the 3200.
The Marion 4×200 relay missed medaling by four hundredths of a second. The Wildcats ran a 1:46.60 to finish tenth. Earlier, junior Janae Maxwell finished 16th in the 100.
