JOHNSTON CITY — The Johnston City Indians were one of the big surprises of the COVID spring football season. The Indians finished 6-0 and shared the Black Diamond Conference title with Fairfield, as the two teams did not play during the shortened season.
The Indians return a load of talent led by Austin Brown, who committed to Wisconsin last month. The Badgers are recruiting Brown play safety. At Johnston City, Brown not only excels on defense, but was also the quarterback. Notice the past tense “was”.
Heath Neibch transferred in from West Frankfort and will take over at quarterback, allowing the Indians to move Brown around the field in an attempt to get him the ball in space. Todd Thomas’ crew has many other weapons, including junior running back Isiah Watson and senior receiver Corbin Hickey along with a talented and experienced group on the line up front.
The Indians will open their season August 27 at Edwards County. The coaches and players say they’re focused on one game at a time. Media and fans can look ahead and circle week 3. September 10 is when the 5-time defending BDC champion Fairfield Mules will pay a visit to Ralph Davison Field.
