HARRISBURG — Expect the unexpected. That’s what coaches are having to deal with each and every week of the high school football season. There have already been multiple games forfeited due to teams dealing with Covid issues, and it’s only Week 2.
In many cases, schools are getting together with others in the same boat to create different matchups, even just a few days before game day. Both CZR head coach Anthony Hargrove and Harrisburg head coach Matt Griffith said there was no hesitation to play, and that the players were all in favor.
That’s what happened when CZR’s Week 2 opponent, Hamilton County, and Harrisburg’s opponent, Du Quoin, both paused all athletic events this week. The Bearcats and Bulldogs decided to play each other.
Prior to the game, Harrisburg players ran out with 13 American flags for the 13 soldiers killed in Afghanistan recently. They held a moment of silence to honor the fallen and their families.
As for the game, Bryant Lester rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Tysen Satterfield tallied a pair of touchdown runs on offense and a pair of interceptions on defense to help Harrisburg win 28-0.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the season. They will host Salem next week. CZR falls to 0-2 and will be in a similar situation next week. The Bearcats are scheduled to host Vienna/Goreville, but the Eagles are not playing a varsity schedule this fall.
