Carbondale hands Centralia 2nd straight loss

CENTRALIA — The Carbondale Terriers rode a strong first half to beat the Centralia Orphans 38-14 at Evers Field Friday night in the South 7 opener for teams.

The Terriers built a 25-0 2nd quarter lead before Centralia could get on the board. Orphans running back Elijah Johnson scored two touchdowns to cut it to 25-14, but Gabe Hillard answered with an 80-yard TD run to give Carbondale a 31-14 lead at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Terriers finished off the scoring with another touchdown in the fourth for the 38-14 win. The Terriers amassed more than 370 yards of offense on the night, led by Hillard’s 170 on the ground.

Amir Johnson led the Orphans’ offense with more than 130 all purpose yards.

Both teams are now 2-2 overall. Carbondale will host Cahokia next Friday, while the Orphans will travel to Althoff.
