BENTON — The Sesser-Valier Red Devils built a double-digit second half lead then had to hold on to knock off the host Rangers 47-42 in the final game of the opening session of the 48th Benton Invitational Tournament.
The Red Devils led 24-18 at the half and then scored the first five points of the third quarter to extend their lead to double figures. S-V led 39-29 after 3.
The Rangers came roaring back, outscoring the Red Devils 11-3 to open the fourth quarter to pull within 42-40. Sesser-Valier did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter but did go 8-11 from the free throw line to seal it.
Gavin Woodland led the Red Devils with 20 points. Colt Packer added 14, including 6-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Reid Baumgarte was the only Ranger to reach double figures. He finished with 10 points.
Sesser-Valier will face one of the other two opening night winners, Hamilton County, Wednesday night at 7:00. Benton will open session two at 5:30 Wednesday against Vandalia. The Vandals also dropped their tourney opener, 72-62 to Meridian.
