WEST FRANKFORT — Taylor Cornelius hit the go ahead jumper with less than a minute to play as the Herrin Tigers scored the game’s final seven points to beat Pinckneyville 50-46 and improve to 2-0 at the West Frankfort Girls Mid-Winter Classic.
The Lady Panthers led 30-24 at the half, but Herrin outscored Pinckneyville 15-5 in the third quarter to lead 39-35 heading to the fourth. The Tigers then scored the first four points of the fourth to extend their lead to eight.
Pinckneyville then scored the next 11 points to regain the lead at 46-43–nine of those came on three Emily Baggett three-pointers. Herrin finished the scoring for the win.
Jersey Summers led Herrin with 12 points. Cornelius added 10. Lily Tanner led Pinckneyville 12. Baggett and Olivia Wiggers each tallied 11.
The Tigers can complete a sweep of the tournament Wednesday night against Sesser-Valier/Waltonville. Pinckneyville will wrap up with West Frankfort.
