CHAMPAIGN — The Steeleville Warriors knew the task in front of them was large in their first trip to state. The Warriors found Yorkville Christian and Duke recruit Jaden Schutt waiting in the first 1A State Semifinal.
Schutt was as good as advertised, especially early, scoring the Mustangs’ first 11 points. Yorkville Christian scored the final 18 points and led 21-2 after one quarter. Schutt finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists.
Steeleville played pretty even the second and third quarters, as Yorkville Christian led 33-13 at the half and 50-25 after three. The Mustangs outscored the Warriors 20-2 in the fourth quarter, much of that done with the starters subbed out for both teams.
Zach Mevert led the Warriors with 10 points. Carter Wasson added eight. Steeleville will come back to face Scales Mound in the third place game at 7:00.
