MARION — The Marion Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final 6:22 to break open a close game and knock off Herrin 21-0 in the season opener for both teams.

Patrick Walker rushed for 100 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Marion attack. Jordyn Beverly scored the Wildcats’ other TD.

After a scoreless first quarter, Walker scored in a 5-yard run. The Wildcats tacked on the two-point conversion to lead 8-0.

The Tigers’ defense frustrated Marion’s offense most of the night, picking off Evan Noelle twice. Marion’s defense was up to the challenge though, holding Herrin at bay the entire night.

Noelle’s 25-yard run set up Beverly’s TD for a 14-0 lead with 6:22 to play. After forcing a quick three and out, the Wildcats marched right back down and scored again. Walker’s second TD of the night was a 7-yard run with 4:27 left to seal the deal.

Marion (1-0) will hit the road in week 2 to tangle with Jerseyville. Herrin (0-1) will welcome another Williamson County foe when they host Carterville for their home opener.
