Area players earn trips and compete at Girls Tennis State Tournament

Several players from the region earned trips to the Girls 1A State Tennis Tournament in Buffalo Grove. After the first day of action, only a handful are still alive in the double elimination tournaments.

Flora’s Lanie Carder went 3-1 on day one and is still alive in the singles consolation bracket. Carder’s teammates, Ava Cammon and Kathryn Jennings also went 3-1 and are still alive in the doubles consolation bracket. Richland County’s Claire Uhl and Evie Potter also went 3-1, joining Cammon and Jennings in the consolation bracket.

Althoff’s Tess Schmeider and Triad’s Jocelynn Carmody both won two of their three matches and are in the singles consolation bracket. Triad has a pair of doubles teams still alive as Karen Speer and Sami Hartoin along with McKinley Saffel and Caty Burton both went 2-1.

Play will resume Friday morning.


Sectional Recaps:
Four individuals and doubles teams from the Herrin and Centralia Sectionals advanced to the Girls 1A State Tournament Buffalo Grove.

At Herrin, Carbondale’s Skylar Moore won the individual title, downing Waterloo’s Kailey Walter 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Benton’s Adriana Tonn and Marion’s Ryan Gulley also advanced. Tonn beat Gulley 6-1, 6-3 for third.

Waterloo’s Teagan Nodorft and Rylee Ivers outlasted Herrin’s Karli Mann and Jersey Summers 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the doubles title. Carbondale’s Julia Oberg and Eislee Moore along with Mt. Vernon’s Alice Feltrin and Katie Fisher also advanced. Oberg and Moore defeated Feltrin and Fisher 6-4, 6-1 for third place.

Waterloo edged Carbondale for the team title.

At Centralia, Flora’s Lanie Carder cruised to the singles title, beating Greenville’s Paige Mathias 6-0, 6-1 for the title. Richland County’s McKenna Snider and Highland’s Ruthie Manor also advanced with Snider defeating Manor 6-0, 6-0 for third place.

Richland County’s Abigail Atwood and Grayce Burgener won the doubles title, beating Greenville’s Katelyn Ridens and Ellie Schaufelberger 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. Flora’s Ava Cammon and Kathryn Jennings and Richland County’s Claire Uhl and Evie Potter also advanced, with Cammon and Jennings downing Uhl and Potter 6-2, 6-2.
