DU QUOIN — As summer drills wrapped up in July, new Du Quoin head football coach Logan Spain looked right at home at Van Metre Field. There’s a good reason–he is home.
Spain graduated from Du Quoin in 2012, playing for legendary coach Al Martin.
Spain has one year of head coaching under his belt. It came on the opposite side of Perry County. After several years as an assistant at Du Quoin, Spain took the head coaching position at Pinckneyville two years ago. A two-week shutdown due to Covid to open the season contributed to an 0-9 campaign.
Spain says despite the record, the experience he gained was huge.
He resigned after the 2021 season, eventually landing at Sessser-Valier/Waltonville last year as an assistant. When the opportunity to take over at his alma mater came about, Spain jumped at the chance. He was hired back in May to succeed Derek Beard, who was 18-17 with two playoff appearances in four seasons.
Spain says this summer has been about setting program expectations. He will officially debut as the Indians’ head coach Friday night August 25th with the season opener at Chester.
