WOODLAWN — This week’s Orthopaedic Center of Southern Illinois MVT–Most Valuable Teacher Award–goes to Mrs. Nicci Little, a second grade teacher at Woodlawn Grade School.
This is Little’s 16th year at the school. It has been unlike any other.
“It has definitely been a challenge,” Little said. “The thing I miss the most is giving the kids hugs or high fives and being able to do group work.”
Woodlawn Grade School principal Sandra Kabat pointed out that Little has been a leader in the school, constantly searching for better ways to teach her kids in a seemingly ever changing environment. “She has come to me and asked for professional development regarding new ideas,” Kabat said. “During COVID this year, she was the first teacher to ask for assistance with Remote Learning. She has taken it upon herself to communicate with families on a daily basis.”
“I did spend many, many hours watching tutorials on how to do things,” Little said. “Every night I go home, and I try to find something even better than I did or a new way to do it.”
In addition to learning new techniques and methods to teach, Little believes she has learned a lot about her students as well.
“I taught my kids how to use Google Classrooms, and we underestimate our kids,” Little said. “They knock it out of the park. They know how to use it. They’re pros at it. They’re seven years old. They just go for it. They’re not intimidated by technology. That’s one thing that’s been a real blessing. I’ve learned not to underestimate them.”
Little believes kids learn better in person at school. That requires masks and other safety protocols which can present other challenges.
“You just have to pay attention to that body language,” Little said. “You can still see it in their eyes. Seven year olds, they’re just so happy to be here. Everything is exciting. My philosophy is to make them feel successful, build up their self esteem. When you spark that joy, and you have joy in what you do everyday, they’re gonna show joy.”
