Southern Illinois coaching legend Rich Herrin was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Benton Wednesday. Herrin passed away late Friday night at the age of 87. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Herrin won 677 games at the high school level and 225 more at SIU, where he took over a fledgling Saluki program and turned into a Missouri Valley Conference champion.
In part two of “Leaving a Legacy”, some of his former players and friends discuss the tremendous undertaking of rebuilding SIU. They also tell us about Herrin’s incredible knowledge of Southern Illinois high school basketball, perhaps only matched by his brother, Ron, which led to great stories and some brotherly disagreements.
