CARTERVILLE — The Carterville Lions scored the first 13 points of their SIRR Mississippi opener against Du Quoin and never looked back, cruising to a 50-30 win Monday night.

Junior Alecia Doyle was dominant for the Lions. Doyle scored 21 of her game high 27 during the second and third quarters, including a four-point play with 1.2 seconds left to give Carterville a 27-8 lead at the half. Doyle then hit three more three-pointers in the third quarter.

It was a wild third quarter for Doyle, one of two returning starters from Carterville’s 2A third place team a year ago. While chasing down a loose ball, Doyle and Du Quoin’s Grace Alongi got tangled up, with Doyle landing awkwardly on her right leg. After getting checked out by the training staff, Doyle returned to the game and promptly hit another three-pointer. Then in the closing seconds of the quarter, Doyle collided with Du Quoin’s Emma Fischer. After getting checked out again during the quarter break, she returned to the floor.

No other player reached double figures. Doyle’s freshman sister, Amayah, added nine points. Delaynie Dearmond led Du Quoin with eight points.

With the win, Carterville improves to 3-0 (1-0). The Lions will visit Anna-Jonesboro Thursday. Du Quoin falls to 1-1 (0-1). The Lady Indians will host Pinckneyville Thursday.
