ANNA — There’s quite a logjam at the top of the River to River boys soccer standings. Carterville/Herrin started Thursday with a half game lead over Pinckneyville, Murphysboro, and Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden.
Thanks to first half goals from Burke Lange and Evan Lennox along with great work in goal by freshman Keegan Weber, Carterville/Herrin added a little cushion to their conference lead with a 2-1 win at Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden.
The Wildcats handed the Lions their only loss of the season five days earlier in Carterville by the same 2-1 tally.
The Lions scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute. Lennox sent a corner kick near the net, and Lange was there to pounce on a loose ball and send it into the net for a 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the 30th minute when Lennox scored on a knuckling free kick to make it 2-0.
Meanwhile, freshman goal keeper Keegan Weber made multiple first half saves to thwart Wildcat chances–including punching away Nick McGrath’s free kick, and later knocking aside Maddox Thorpe’s effort in close.
The Lions led 2-0 at the half. AJC got on the board in the second half, but could not get the equalizer.
Carterville/Herrin improves to 4-1-1 with the win. AJC falls to 3-2.
