HERRIN — For the first time in 18 years, the Murphysboro Red Devils are conference champions in girls track and field.

The Red Devils held off the host Tigers to win the SIRR Ohio Wednesday. Led by De’aja Finch, Murphysboro dominated the sprints. Finch won the 100 and the 200 and also ran the anchor legs for the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relays. Finch’s teammate, Maci Uffelman, finished third in the 100 and second in the 200.

The day featured some great individual performances. Massac County’s Ansley Bailey won three events. The SIU signee won the 3200, the 800, and the 400. Bailey had planned to try to also run in the 1600, but wound up opting not to do so.

Herrin freshman Karli Mann won both the long and triple jumps as well as finishing second in the pole vault and 400. Mann accounted for 36 points for the Tigers.

Harrisburg’s Sidney Neal swept the two hurdle events.

The most unique storyline may have come from the discus, where Massac County’s Claire Bremer took time out from the Lady Patriots’ softball team to win with a throw of 95-05. This was Bremer’s first meet of the season.
