SALEM — The Mascoutah Indians used a balanced scoring attack, seemingly getting points from all parts of their roster, to roll to the Salem 2A Girls Track and Field Sectional championship.

A total of seven athletes from the immediate area and two relays did qualify for next week’s 2A State Championship meet in Charleston. Four of the seven qualified in two events–Centralia’s Kylie Gormann (long jump, triple jump), Carbondale’s Madyson Swope (shot put, discus), Massac County’s Ansley Bailey (400, 800), and Anna-Jonesboro’s Brodie Denny (800, 1600).

Marion’s Janae Maxwell qualified in the 100 with a second place finish, then anchored the Lady Wildcats winning 4×200 team. Maxwell’s teammate Maryiah Menicucci won the shot put.

Herrin freshman Karli Mann qualified for state with her second place finish in the triple jump. The Carbondale 4×800 also qualified for state with a second place finish thanks to a season best time.

The top individual performance came from Columbia sophomore Abby Venhaus who won three events–the 100, 200, and the long jump.
