MT. VERNON — Perfect: that was Carbondale sophomore quarterback Brock Bowlby in Carbondale’s 53-7 win over the Mt. Vernon Rams on Friday night, completing all 12 passing attempts for 267 yards and six touchdowns to six different receivers.
Bowlby wasn’t alone. The Carbondale defense gifted the offense four turnovers, and the Terriers scored after each at Ken Hunt Stadium.
Carbondale got the scoring started early. After a stalled Mt. Vernon opening drive, the Terriers quickly found a 54-yard pass to William Skiles which setup another completion to Skiles, this time 8-yards for the score with 8:15 left in the 1st. The Terriers added a 2-point conversion for the 8-0 lead.
A second stalled Mt. Vernon drive led to Bowlby finding Lamark Threadgill on a swing pass, and Threadgill did the rest running 73-yards for paydirt, giving the Terriers a 16-0 advantage at the 5:37 mark. The Rams ate a little more time off of the clock on their third drive, but after a punt, they would give up another big play. With 2:47 left in the first, Bowlby hooked up with tight end Phillip Johnson for a 67-yard pass that would put the Terriers on top 22-0. Then Carbondale’s defense stepped up and started forcing turnovers.
With 1:49 left in the first, the Terriers forced a Mt. Vernon fumble that led to a long drive resulting in Bowlby fiFunchess for an 8-yard score with 8:48 remaining in the 2nd. Carbondale Kicker Ian Davis pnding DeMarcus inned the Rams back deep on the ensuing kickoff and 32 seconds later the Rams would fumble again at their own 9-yard line. Gabe Hilliard would do the rest and run another touchdown in from 9-yards out, extending the Carbondale lead to 36-0.
Deep in their own territory, the Rams went for it on 4th down and came up empty, setting up the Terriers with prime field position halfway through the quarter. On the Mt. Vernon 20, Bowlby found another new TD target in Funchess and extend the lead to 43-0. The Terriers weren’t finished when Trevor Harsy picked off the Rams’ Caden Plummer with 4:12 left in the half. Bowlby pulled another rabbit out of his hat from the 5-yard line when his tipped pass made it into the hands of Mason Bell who was on the ground in the endzone and made the grab. The Terriers took the 50-0 lead into the locker room at half.
The Rams would add some offense on Homecoming and Senior Nights when senior quarterback Caden Plummer ran in a 6-yard touchdown to get Mt. Vernon on the board in the 3rd quarter.
Carbondale’s Ian Davis added a 46-yard field goal to give us the final score of 53-7 and finishing off his already great week in Mt. Vernon. Davis was also the match medalist for the 2A Boys’ Golf Regional held in Mt. Vernon on Monday.
Plummer in his first start at quarterback had 10-carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. Mt. Vernon’s Ethan Rivera had 9-carries also for 71 yards. Terriers’ receivers combined for 267 yards and six touchdowns, with Hilliard adding 34-yards on the ground and a TD.
