ELDORADO — The fifth-seeded Carterville Lions broke open a close game with 15-0 third quarter run to beat West Frankfort 64-46 in the first round of the 57th Annual Eldorado Holiday Tournament.

The Lions led 21-19 at the half but ratcheted up the pressure defensively in the third quarter with five steals leading baskets. John Stroud led assault with four of the five steals as the Redbirds struggled against the Carterville press.

Peyton Bittle led the Lions with 18 points off the bench. Lucas Whittington led the Redbirds with 13.

Carterville will face Fairfield in the quarterfinals, while West Frankfort will take on Anna-Jonesboro in the consolation bracket.
