Lady Rams roll past Althoff

MT. VERNON — The Mount Vernon Lady Rams remained unbeaten in South 7 play after taking down the Althoff Lady Crusaders 64-39.

The game started off with great defense from the Lady Rams, getting several steals but were only able to convert defense into points once. The game stood at 1-0 until the five minute mark in the first quarter when Ashlyn Childers got the Lady Rams going with a three pointer. The Rams finished the first quarter up 16-9.

The second quarter was more of the same, as the Lady Rams steadily grew their lead to 14 points by the end of the half with a score of 31-17. Childers led Mt. Vernon in first half scoring with 11 points, 9 of which came from the three point line. Emilee Travnicek led the Lady Crusaders with 10.

The second half started just like the first half with both teams unable to score until halfway through the third quarter when the Lady Crusaders Isabella Peterson made a tough layup. The Lady Rams were quick to answer by putting together a sequence of great plays. Claire Heinzman started the sequence with an and-one layup followed by a steal from Childers that led to a layup by Jacie Dees. Then Althoff’s Addison Leib got hot at the end of the quarter, hitting three 3-pointers. Mount Vernon made sure to cap off an eventful third quarter with a 6-0 run including a buzzer-beating layup by DaZaria James to make the score 49-30 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Rams extended their lead in the fourth quarter with Kennady Hayes contributing three 3-pointers.

The Lady Rams were led in scoring by Childers who had 17 points, hitting a total of five 3-pointers. Mount Vernon also had big contributions from Hayes with 14 and Dees with 12. The Lady Crusaders top scorers were Leib pouring in 11 points, and Anna Brewer who had 10.

The conference win boosted the Lady Rams to a perfect 7-0 in conference play and an overall record of 19-5. The loss for the Lady Crusaders dropped them to 2-5 in conference play and 7-19 overall.

Mount Vernon’s next matchup is a home game on Tuesday against longtime rival Centralia. The last time these two teams played, the Lady Rams won 46-34 win.
