MURPHYSBORO — Many of the region’s top boys and girls cross country teams and individuals visited Riverside Park for the annual Murphysboro Invitational. More than 300 total runners took to the course representing 56 teams and 30 schools.
Despite the numbers it was the usual suspects bringing home the titles.
Pope County junior Ahry Comer smashed the course record by 30 seconds on the way to the win. Comer posted a time of 18:40, which was 61 seconds faster than Murphysboro’s Miah Gilmore. Anna-Jonesboro’s Brodie Denny was third followed by Carterville’s Molly Robertson and Goreville’s Molly Merrill.
Du Quoin edged A-J for the team title with Carterville, Pinckneyville, and Benton rounding out the top five.
There was a course record on the boys’ side as well. Pinckneyville junior Isaac Teel continued his fantastic start to the season, finishing with a time of 15:17, breaking the record set by Carbondale’s Alex Partlow who now runs at the University of Illinois. Teel’s time was :27 faster than Benton’s Gavin Genisio. Genisio’s teammates Goob McLain and Cole Buchanan along with Webber’s Jaxon Dalby rounded out the top five.
Benton cruised to the team title with Carbondale slipping past Herrin for second with Pinckneyville and A-J finishing the top five teams.
