JOHNSTON CITY — The Johnston City Indians won the battle of unbeatens outscoring Carmi-White County 15-0 in the second half to win 37-28, clinching a share of their third straight Black Diamond Conference championship.
Isiah Watson rushed for 134 yards and scored two touchdowns, including the game clincher for Johnston City with 3:09 to play.
The Indians had to overcome another massive night from Bulldogs’ senior Isaac King, who rushed 34 times for 249 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. It was King’s 10th career 200-yard game and his 18th consecutive 100-yard game.
Johnston City jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Carmi-White County scored 22 consecutive points on a pair of short touchdown runs from Draxtyn Aud and an 18-yard TD run from King following an Indians’ fumble.
Despite neither team completing a pass the entire night, this game featured three touchdowns of 65 or more yards, and they all came within a 4:30 span in the second quarter.
Johnston City’s Boston Peyton took an inside handoff and broke a 68-yard touchdown run. After the Indians got a stop defensively, Evan Sanders ripped off a 74-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 22-22.
King responded with a 65-yard scoring scamper to give the Bulldogs a 28-22 lead at the half.
Johnston City tightened the defense, holding King to less than 60 yards and no scores in the second half, although he did have a 35-yard TD run called back due to penalty in the fourth quarter.
The Indians improve to 8-0. They will go for the perfect regular season and the outright conference title next Friday at CZR. The Bulldogs fall to 7-1. They will close the regular season at home against Flora.
