CARBONDALE — The Herrin Tigers broke open a close game with five runs over their final three at bats to win at Carbondale 7-3.
The Tigers took the lead on Remy James’ RBI double in the top of the fifth inning. Herrin tacked on two more for a 5-2 lead.
The Tigers added a run in the sixth when the Terriers were unable to come up with Branson Hill’s line allowing Haylee Smith to score. Herrin then stole a run in the seventh, when Jersey Summers swiped home on the back end of a double steal.
Carbondale got one of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh when Arwen Robison scored on a wild pitch, but that was the only run the Terriers would score, thanks in part to a great running catch in center by Zoey Linton to rob Lauren Lehman of extra bases.
Herrin improves to 2-0 on the young season, while Carbondale falls to 1-1.
